The general operating permit, ABE for short, is granted to the vehicle or a vehicle part after it has been successfully tested.

Consequently, every registered vehicle has an ABE. However, if you now change the vehicle by attaching your vehicle accessories, the ABE may expire. As long as you attach the accessories properly to your vehicle, the operating permit of the vehicle remains. Depending on the vehicle part, however, a modification approval by an official expert may be necessary in order to be allowed to drive your vehicle on public roads.

If this is the case, this will be indicated in the type approval of your vehicle part. An entry of the ABE of your car accessories in the type approval of your vehicle is possible, but not absolutely necessary. You can also carry the ABE for individual parts. If a vehicle is used with retrofitted vehicle parts without a valid operating permit, the vehicle registration expires and the insurance coverage can also be affected.

The cost of registering the operating permit of the vehicle part in the ABE of the vehicle is 35 to 70 euros if the vehicle part already has an ABE. If an expert opinion has to be carried out first, the costs are considerably higher.
